Silsilah Summer Course


RATIONALE

The 24th Silsilah Summer Course on “Muslim-Christian Dialogue” is an extensive study program on Islam and Christianity in the context of the Culture of Dialogue, Path to Peace, with a special focus on Interreligious Dialogue.

This year Silsilah Dialogue Institute offers three different courses which are open to professionals, teachers, personnel of government and non-government institutions, groups and schools who wish to be more knowledgeable and active in Muslim-Christian Dialogue. It also welcomes people of different cultures and religions who feel the need for a deeper and better understanding of the Culture of Dialogue as a style of life. The courses will also be beneficial to those who simply would like to deepen their respective knowledge and experiences of the two faith traditions.
To optimize the learning experience of the participants, only forty (40) students will be accepted for each course on a first come first served basis. Participants may choose either the Basic or the Intensive Course, but they have the option to also attend the Special Course.

A. Basic Course – April 11 - May 7, 2010
B. Special Course – May 16 - 22, 2010
C. Intensive Course - May 23 - 29, 2010

OBJECTIVES

¨ To contribute to the formal knowledge on Islam and Christianity and rediscover the dialogue elements of both religions.
¨ To build greater understanding of the aspirations and problems of both religious communities towards the promotion of a Culture of Dialogue, Path to Peace.
¨ To evoke awareness and appreciation of dialogue in the religious, cultural, social and political life of Muslim and Christian communities.
¨ To provide a conducive atmosphere for sincere and meaningful encounter between Muslims and Christians.

PARTICIPANTS
¨ Preferably college graduates
¨ Muslims, Christians, and people of other living faiths.
¨ Involved in community outreach programs in schools, government and non-government sectors or those interested to be involved.
¨ Those whose work could be enhanced by attending the course.
¨ If possible, recommended or endorsed by school head or superior.

These fees are considered counterpart of the participants. Other expenses are subsidized by MISSIO (Aachen).

2. (1st week) Culture of Dialogue Essential Elements of Dialogue towards Harmony, Solidarity and Peace: Spirituality of Dialogue,
Interreligious Dialogue and Social Transformation and resolution of conflicts

3. History of Islam Classical Period of Islam
(2nd week) The Advent and Expansion of Islam in Southeast Asia and the Philippines

History of Christianity Early Beginnings of Christianity
(2nd week) Its Growth and Expansion particularly in the Philippines

4. The Holy Qur’an Introduction to the Holy Qur’an

B. SPECIAL COURSE

THEME: Promoting the Culture of Dialogue in Schools and communities : Why and How.

CULTURE OF DIALOGUE

It is a holistic approach of dialogue that emphasizes the human and spiritual dimensions of life-in-dialogue with God,with oneself,with others and with creation. It is a style of life of a deeper relation among people of different cultures and religions that can challenge them to build together a society where God’s values and ethics can be guiding principles in moving together towards Harmony, Solidarity and Peace. Dialogue becomes a culture when many people of sincere hearts and minds will believe in it and promote it in all levels of society. This special course will challenge participants to introduce the CULTURE OF DIALOGUE in schools and communities, giving some guidelines in sharing experiences.


C. INTENSIVE COURSE

CERTIFICATE OF COMPLETION

A certificate of completion will be awarded to participants at the end of each course. These certificates are recognized by schools, seminaries, and other institutions.

ACCREDITATION

Participants attending any of these courses can ask for credits to be recognized for an undergraduate or graduate (master’s or doctoral) course through the Silsilah Dialogue Institute (SDI) links with other institutions and universities in the Philippines.
